Vaccinations for Kittens and Cats

Indoor Kittens
Kittens have very special needs as their immune systems have not matured enough to fully protect them against disease.  They are curious and playful around other animals, placing them at increased risk for disease and they have remnants of antibodies from their mothers that prevent vaccinations from becoming fully protective until 16 weeks of age.  For all of these reasons, we start kittens on a vaccination schedule at 6 to 8 weeks of age for most core vaccinations and then booster these vaccines every 3 to 4 weeks until they are 16 weeks of age.  The Rabies vaccination is given at 12 weeks of age and then boostered at one year of age.  Call us for an appointment to have your kitten examined and together we will develop a plan to start him or her out on the path to life-long health and happiness!

Indoor/Outdoor or Outdoor Kittens
Indoor/outdoor kittens are at much higher risk for contagious diseases (as well as parasites and other problems).  Just like indoor kittens, these kittens have very special needs as their immune systems have not matured enough to fully protect them against disease.  They are curious and playful around other animals, placing them at increased risk for disease, and they have remnants of antibodies from their mothers that prevent vaccinations from becoming fully protective until 16 weeks of age. For indoor/outdoor kittens, we also give noncore vaccines based on their risk category beginning about 10 to 12 weeks of age with boosters as needed for full protection.  Call us for an appointment to have your kitten examined and together we will develop a plan to start him or her out on the path to life-long health and happiness!

Indoor Adult Cats
The brand of feline vaccine we have chosen to use is a new recombinant vaccine, called Purevax, that has removed the chemicals connected to vaccine-associated cancers in cats.  They are annual vaccines.  At one year of age, all cats need to have boosters of the core vaccinations.   After this, the noncore vaccines will be given based on the health status and risk category of the cat and the potential for side effects.  At your cat's bi-annual exams, we will re-evaluate your pet's needs and health.  At each visit, we will also focus on medical issues such as appropriate weight, behavior in the home, dental health and fecal examinations.  As your cat ages, his or her needs will change along with the focus of our visits.  After seven years of age, we will begin to perform annual senior health panels, switch to senior foods, become aggressive in our fight against dental disease (which insidiously destroys the health of all body systems), and monitor carefully for the development of common age-related diseases.  Call us for an appointment to have your cat examined and together we will develop a long-term plan to make his or her life as happy and healthy as it can be!

Indoor/Outdoor or Outdoor Adult Cats
Indoor/Outdoor cats have a much higher risk for disease which changes the level of care they need in order to ensure their continued health.  Here we have chosen to use a new brand of recombinant vaccine, called Purevax, that has removed the chemicals that cause vaccine-associated cancers in cats.  These are annual vaccines.  At one year of age, all cats need to have boosters of the core vaccinations.  Added to this, indoor/outdoor cats will also have a combination of non-core vaccines such as the Feline Leukemia or Feline AIDS vaccine and Chlamydia sp. bacterin.  After one year of age, the core and non-core vaccines will be given based on the health status and risk category of the cat and the potential for side effects.  Each year, we will re-evaluate your cat's risk, health and needs to best fit the vaccine schedule to your pet.  Call us for an appointment to have your cat examined and together we will develop a long-term plan to make his or her life as happy and healthy as it can be!
